Our story

• 2004: Île sans fil. A Montréal community organization launches free public Wi-Fi (“Wi-Fi everywhere, for everyone”) and develops WifiDog, an open-source captive portal adopted far beyond Montréal.

• 2016: Québec’s ZAPs. The organization joins the Public Access Zones (ZAP) movement and becomes the Montréal chapter of a Québec-wide network. It built more than 70% of the first version of the City of Montréal’s public Wi-Fi network, now MTLWiFi, in 16 of its 19 boroughs.

• Today: EDGE. The group puts twenty years of network operations to work for measurement: camera-free sensors, local artificial intelligence, sovereign data.

 

The ZAP group

• ZAP, coopérative de producteurs à impacts numériques (a producers’ cooperative): designs, deploys and operates the infrastructure, and holds the agreements with municipalities, business development associations and institutions.

• ZAP, digital solutions inc.: holds the group’s intellectual property, funds research and development and leads the B Corp certification process.
